'@natsecwonk': Under an anonymous Twitter account Jofi Joseph bashed his bosses and other Washington elites

‘@natsecwonk’: Under an anonymous Twitter account Jofi  Joseph bashed his bosses and other Washington elites

The man that was fired from his White House  job for making anonymous attacks on administration officials on Twitter may now  be investigated for possibly hiring prostitutes.

Jofi Joseph was fired on Tuesday after he was  unmasked as the man behind the @NatSecWonk account that had captivated so much  of D.C. by taking shots at politicians and hinting of his exclusive knowledge.

Now investigators Joseph, who is married, may  be connected to another anonymous account that frequently made mentions of  hiring prostitutes.

While Joseph has come forward and put out a  statement apologizing for the ‘inappropriate and mean-spirited comments’ that he  made via @NatSecWonk, he made no mention of any connection to the second  account, called @DCHobbyist.

That account has now been shut following the  swarm of attention, but Foreign Policy reports that it directed a  number of tweets at self-identified escorts.

At one point, @DCHobbyist wrote about  Toronto’s ‘tsunami of gorgeous and sensual escorts’.

Just three days later, it directed a message  to a woman who identified herself as a ‘luxury companion and escort’ and wrote  ‘I hopey ou know that I reminisce fondly about our date. Do let me know if you  ever find your way back to DC.’

A second account? Some believe Joseph may be behind this second parody account, and if so, it will be problematic for him as it frequently discusses soliciting prostitutes

If the two accounts are connected, Joseph may  face legal problems regarding his alleged use of prostitutes.

Not only is solicitation a crime, but there  are political concerns as well since Joseph’s wife is a well-respected advisor  on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Aside from the moral repercussions of  cheating, there is inevitably concern about the prospect of being blackmailed  for information or access, based either on his now-former role as a  non-proliferation director on the National Security Council or his wife Carolyn  Leddy’s role in the Senate.

After first refusing to comment to Politico’s  Glenn Thrush about the scandal when it first broke on Wednesday, saying that it  would ‘affect his ability to get a new job,’ he followed up with a formal  statement.

‘It has been a privilege to serve in this  Administration and I deeply regret violating the trust and confidence placed in  me,’ he said in the statement.

He went on to explain that it ‘started out as  an intended parody account of DC culture’.

Those comments included insults hurled at  Republicans and Democrats alike.

‘So when will someone do us the favor of  getting rid of Sarah Palin and the rest of her white trash family? What utter  useless garbage,’ he tweeted last October about the former Republican Vice  Presidential nominee.

Before Anthony Weiner’s first trouble with  Twitter that ended his Congressional career, and before Samantha Powers was  appointed as the American ambassador to the United Nations, he took aim at their  love choices.

‘Was Huma Abedin wearing beer goggles the  night she met Anthony Wiener? Almost as bad a pairing as Samantha Powers and  Cass Sunstein,’ @NatSecWonk tweeted in 2011.

There were serious comments about political  connections as well- rather than petty personal jabs.

‘I’m a fan of Obama, but his continuing  reliance and dependence upon a vacuous cipher like Valerie Jarrett concerns me,’  he said of the President’s longtime friend and advisor.

‘More people should be asking why John Kerry  installed two former aides, both with ZERO foreign policy experience, into top  posts at State,’ he also wrote.

Colin Powell has admitted to exchanging ‘very  personal’ emails with a Romanian diplomat who sent him photos of herself – one  in a bikini – and confessed to loving him but he denies having an affair with  the much younger woman.

The 76-year-old retired general told the  Smoking Gun that he met Corina Cretu, 45, roughly  ten years ago when she was working as an assistant to the president of Romania.  She is now a member of the European Parliament.

Married Powell admitted to the exchange after  a hacker released details from their intimate messages.

In one email, dated November 14, 2011, Miss  Cretu wrote: ‘I have loved you too much, too many years. YOU were my greatest  love of my life…’.

In another she urges Powell, ‘Sip a  glass of  wine with me, as you used to tell me – advising me to lie neck  [naked] on tha  sofa.’

She also sent him pictures of herself,  including one in a hot tub and a bikini shot. However, the affection seems not  to have been returned.

‘After I left the Department of State in  January 2005 we stayed in touch via email,’ he told TSG. ‘Over time the emails  became of a very personal nature, but did not result in an affair. Those type of  emails ended a few years ago. There was no affair then and there is not one  now.’

In response to questions about multiple  photos included in some of the emails, he said, ‘She sent photos on a regular  basis. Lots of family photos with her nieces, who she adores,  family reunions,  formal business sessions, her wedding and some bathing  suit photos … Never  anything improper.’

Powell has been married for 50 years to his  wife, Alma, and Cretu was married last year.

He was forced to address his relationship  with Cretu on Thursday after the notorious hacker ‘Guccifer’ posted a link to a  Google document on Powell’s Facebook wall that contained some of the emails. The  post was promptly removed from his wall.

In the emails, ‘Cretu calls [Powell] the love  of her life and describes a  relationship that spanned more than a decade,’  according to TSG. ‘The 2010-2011 e-mails  would leave most readers with the  clear impression that the forlorn  Cretu is writing about the twilight of a  romance.’

In one email dated Christmas Eve 2010, she  wrote: ‘I did not believe that at 43 I can cry more for a man like a teenager.’  She added: ‘Have you such a heart to leave me here alone, [thinking] of you,  without enjoying your gifts… your small gestures or gifts, which once was very  powerful, without your words every day?’

Another, from 2011, said: ‘Nobody is saying  to go to bed. I just want to see you, nothing more.’

Powell spokeswoman Peggy Cifrino confirmed  The Smoking Gun’s report.

‘Yes, the article accurately reflects the  situation and that is General Powell’s statement,’ Cifrino said in an email to  Politico.

Cretu has not responded to a request for  comment from MailOnline.

Months ago, Guccifer successfully accessed  email accounts belonging to Powell  and a number of other high-ranking  officials, including former President George W. Bush and his family. The emails  between Powell and Cretu were not released at the time.

Powell said he asked Cretu earlier this week  – after the link to the emails was posted – to delete all the messages between  them. That email was also accessed by the hacker and posted online.

Powell explained to the Smoking Gun: ‘In  light of what was happening it seems obvious to ask Ms. Cretu to delete emails.’

He said the two ‘remain friends and  are in  touch,’ but have only seen each other ‘once or twice’ over the  past eight years  at ‘group conferences’ in Washington, D.C.

‘I am pleased that she is having a successful  career,’ Powell said. ‘I am pleased that she is recently and happily  married.’

Cretu posted a blog about the conference and  included a photo of herself and Colin Powell.

‘Commander of U.S. troops in the first Gulf  War and Secretary of State from 2001 to 2005, General Colin Powell is one of the  most avid observers of global developments and also an old and good friend of  Romania,’ she wrote, according to an English translation of her blog, which was  written in Romanian. ‘I had, along with colleagues from Socialist MEP  delegation, a very interesting discussion, focusing particularly on  transatlantic cooperation in the current geopolitical framework.’

US defence contractor admits to giving secrets to Chinese girlfriend

– Bishop had access to “top secret” information on efforts to defend against a ballistic missile attack from North Korea

UPDATED : Thursday, 13 March, 2014, 1:25am

Associated Press in Honolulu

Bishop had US secrets at home.

A civilian US defence contractor accused of giving military secrets to a Chinese girlfriend half his age will be entering a guilty plea, according to his attorney.

Benjamin Bishop was expected to plead guilty in federal court  today to one count of transmitting national defence information to a person not entitled to receive it and one count of unlawfully retaining national defence documents and plans.

Bishop, 60, was arrested in March last year at the headquarters of the US Pacific Command, where he worked.

A document for the plea agreement, filed on Tuesday, said Bishop e-mailed his girlfriend classified information on joint training and planning sessions between the US and South Korea.

It said Bishop had classified documents at his Hawaii home, including one titled “US Department of Defence China Strategy”, another on US force posture in Asia and the Pacific and a US Pacific Command joint intelligence operations centre special report. A new tape has allegedly captured actor Tom Sizemore making the extraordinary claim that he arranged a tryst between his ex girlfriend Elizabeth Hurley up with Bill Clinton but the British model has been quick to vehemently deny the story.

A recording of the actor- who was recently photographed while reportedly smoking crystal meth- tells how he attended a White House screening of his movie Saving Private Ryan  when then-President Clinton cornered him and asked for his ex girlfriend’s number.

The alleged relationship between Hurley and Sizemore, who has had a very public battle with drugs and alcohol for years, allegedly began when they met filming a movie in 1992 but they were never photographed together aside from being on set, and while he wrote about her in his memoir, she has never confirmed having a romantic relationship with the American actor.

Sizemore is heard speaking to two unidentified people on the tape, obtained by Radar Online, and he told how the President allegedly used his most formal title to both convince Sizemore to give him Hurley’s number- and then later to get Hurley on a plane to D.C. from Los Angeles.

‘Give it to me. You dumb m***********r,  I’m the Commander-in-Chief of the United States of America. The buck  stops here. Give me the damn number,’ Clinton said, according to  Sizemore.

Malik Obama, the president’s Kenyan half brother, was photographed in 2010 at a public event in Yemen wearing a ‘keffiyeh’ – a special scarf – bearing two anti-Israel slogans of the terror group Hamas, it emerged today.

‘Jerusalem is ours – WE ARE COMING,’ reads one saying. ‘From the river to the sea,’ says the other statement.

That rallying cry refers to Palestinian militants’ belief that the territory representing Israel, with the Jordan River to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, rightfully belongs to them – and Israel should not exist.

‘Too hot’ report on police leaks to media was buried as Leveson Inquiry ignored Met’s bombshell intelligence report

Bombshell file on Met links to News International was dismissed by Leveson Inquiry – classified 2006 document alleged senior officer passed secret information on Met chief’s decisions to the ‘News of the World’

Tom Harper

Sunday, 19 January 2014

The Leveson Inquiry dismissed a police intelligence report that detailed an apparently corrupt relationship between a very senior former officer and the News of the World.

The classified document, dated April 2006, alleged that the officer was obtaining highly confidential information on decisions taken by Lord Blair when he was the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, and passing it on to the now defunct Sunday tabloid.

Robert Jay, the lead counsel to the Leveson Inquiry, who is now a judge, had stated that Scotland Yard did not provide him with a copy of the intelligence report until April 2012 – six weeks after it could have been raised publicly with Lord Blair in the hearings. Mr Jay did say, though, that he had been aware of the report’s existence earlier. Written statements made by a Drug Enforcement Administration  (DEA) agent and a US Department of Justice official in US  District Court of Chicago following the 2009 arrest of Jesus  Vicente Zambada-Niebla – son of a Sinaloa leader Ismael “El  Mayo” Zambada and the organization’s alleged “logistics  coordinator” – indicate that DEA agents met with top Sinaloa  officials over 50 times beginning in 2000.

It is a story that flummoxed investigators – how a highly paid climate-change expert at the Environmental Protection Agency managed to defraud the government of nearly $1m, by pretending for a decade to be an undercover CIA agent.

John Beale, 65, is to undergo sentencing in a DC federal court on Wednesday, after pleading guilty to defrauding the government of $900,000 in salary and other benefits. Beale, who used his ruse to disappear for months at a time, has agreed to pay some $1.3m in restitution. He faces up to three years in jail.

The scandal could rebound against the current administrator of the EPA, Gina McCarthy, and her efforts to carry out President Barack Obama’s climate-change agenda. Last week, an official investigation found that she knew of the fraud for more than a year. Other officials who worked with Beale at the agency are under investigation and in a report last week, the EPA inspector general said senior agency officials had “enabled” Beale by failing to challenge any of his stories or expense claims amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. Movie producer was working secretly for Israeli intelligence on arms deals and claims other Hollywood figures including Sydney Pollack helped him

Revealed: Arnon Milchan – the Hollywood producer behind hits Pretty Woman, Fight Club and LA Confidential who became a real-life James Bond

Arnon Milchan at the premiere of Mr and Mrs Smith, which he produced

Friday 22 November 2013

In the early 1980s, movie producer Arnon Milchan presided over a string of hits, collaborating with Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Sergio Leone and Ridley Scott. But what his film industry friends didn’t know was that while his Hollywood career flourished, Milchan was also winding down a secret double life as an arms dealer. The mogul behind hits such as Pretty Woman, Fight Club and LA Confidential also spent about 20 years as a leading Israeli intelligence agent.

Although Milchan’s clandestine career was widely known, he had never confessed to it in public until now. The Israeli investigative documentary series Uvda (“Fact”) will broadcast an interview next week, in which Milchan revealed that he facilitated arms deals on behalf of Israel, beginning in the 1960s. Speaking to Uvda host Ilana Dayan, he asked, “Do you know what it’s like to be a twentysomething-year-old kid [and] his country lets him be James Bond?”

Info Demanded on Turmoil at U.S. Missile Base

PHILADELPHIA (CN) – A public policy group sued the Pentagon for information on why 17 military officers at Minot Air Force Base lost their certification to launch nuclear-armed Minuteman III missiles after an Air Force review in March.

Speaking Truth to Power sued the U.S. Strategic Command and the Department of Defense in a federal FOIA complaint.

It claims the Pentagon has not responded to its May request for information about the investigation of the 91st Missile Wing at Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota.

That investigation, carried out by the Air Force Global Strike Command Inspector General, revealed “grave deficiencies [in] the missile wing’s operational ability to launch Minuteman III missiles,” according to the lawsuit.

It continues: “As a result of the inspection, 17 officers at Minot AFB were removed from the highly sensitive duty of standing watch 24 hours a day over the missiles.

Two of the US navy’s top intelligence officials had their access to classified materials suspended on Friday over their ties to a widening bribery scandal involving a Singapore-based defence contractor, the navy said.

Vice-Admiral Ted Branch, director of naval intelligence, and Rear Admiral Bruce Loveless, the director of intelligence operations, were also put on temporary leave because of allegations of “inappropriate conduct”.

“There is no indication, nor do the allegations suggest, that in either case there was any breach of classified information,” Rear Admiral John Kirby, the navy’s chief of information, said in a statement.

Branch and Loveless are the most senior navy officials so far linked to a case involving Leonard Glenn Francis, whose company Glenn Defense Marine Asia helped arrange maintenance and resupply visits for navy ships to Asian ports.

Francis, a Malaysian national, is accused of providing prostitutes, money, concert tickets and other gifts in exchange for sensitive and classified navy information, such as ship movements. He would use that information to arrange visits by US navy vessels to ports where his company had contracts.

The US Justice Department estimated that Francis, who was arrested in San Diego in September, provided hundreds of millions of dollars in services to the navy.

Three other Navy officials have already been charged over the affair. They include Navy Commander Michael Misiewicz, charged in September with accepting paid travel, the services of prostitutes and Lady Gaga concert tickets from Francis’s company, California prosecutors said.

On Wednesday, Commander Jose Luis Sanchez was arrested in Florida and charged with accepting prostitutes, luxury travel and $100,000 in cash from Francis “in exchange for classified and internal US navy information,” prosecutors said.

Kirby said that although Branch and Loveless had not been charged, the suspension of their access to classified materials was “deemed prudent given the sensitive nature of their current duties”. He said the allegations against them involve conduct that occurred before their current assignments.

Kirby said it was possible more navy officials would be implicated in the widening scandal.

Terrorists and Criminals may now exploit all the vunerabilities the NSA and GCHQ had built into our systems

Berners-Lee: ‘Appalling and foolish’ NSA spying HELPS CRIMINALS

Crooks rush in where spies boldly tread, says internet godhead

By Jasper Hamill

Posted in Security,  7th November 2013 14:58 GMT

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, granddaddy of the internet, has attacked the NSA and GCHQ for their “appalling and foolish” cracking of online encryption.

He warned that spooks’ attempts to break encryption standards played into the hands of cyber-criminals and rival states, saying spies were “naive” to think their own techniques would not be used against them.

“It’s naïve to imagine that if you introduce a weakness into a system you will be the only one to use it,” said Berners-Lee, adding: “I’m very sympathetic to attempts to increase security against organised crime, but you have to distinguish yourself from the criminal.”

In an interview with the Guardian, the father of the internet called for a “full and frank public debate” on digital surveillance.

His comments came ahead of an unprecedented inquiry into surveillance, which will see chief spooks grilled in full public view this afternoon.

“Whistleblowers, and responsible media outlets that work with them, play an important role in society,” Sir Tim said. “We need powerful agencies to combat criminal activity online – but any powerful agency needs checks and balances and, based on recent revelations, it seems the current system of checks and balances has failed.”

The coverage of the Edward Snowden leaks “has been in the public interest and has uncovered many important issues which now need a full and frank public debate”, he continued.

The heads of MI6, MI5 and GCHQ will be interview on live TV today for the first time. Starting at 2pm, Sir John Sawers, MI6 chief, Sir Iain Lobban, director of GCHQ, and Andrew Parker, director general of MI5, will appear in front of Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC).

According to a statement on the ISC website, a slight delay (reportedly of two minutes) would be used on the video feed, just in case the spooks let something controversial slip out.

“The session will give an insight into the world of intelligence and the work the agencies do on behalf of the UK,” the ISC said. “It represents a very significant step forward in terms of the openness and transparency of the agencies. The Committee will question the agency heads on the work of the agencies, their current priorities and the threats to the UK. Among other things it will cover the terrorist threat, regional instability and weapons proliferation, cyber security and espionage.”

“However,” continued the ISC, “since this is a public session, it will not cover details of intelligence capabilities or techniques, ongoing operations or sub judice matters.”

Edward Snowden sparked the surveillance scandal after revealing the existence of an NSA spying scheme called PRISM and a comparable British one called TEMPORA, operated by GCHQ.

A group of 28 Tory MPs have written to the Guardian to protest against its continued publication of Snowden’s revelations. The letter said publishing the secret material “runs the risk of compromising the vital work of the institutions, processes and people who protect the safety of this country”. ®

Brian Binley MP: ‘We have to be careful, politicians scrounge all the time’

On a taxpayer-funded trip to Malta, as he enjoyed the hospitality of a bank   and prepared to attend a complimentary open-air concert that evening, Brian   Binley MP was alerted to the presence of a local politician wandering   nearby.

“You see, we are totally corrupt,” he said to one of his hosts.

A tongue-in-cheek comment it may have been, but it was not the first time   during the trip that the Conservative member for Northampton South had felt   the need to poke fun at the conclusions that could be drawn from the   largesse he was enjoying.

Earlier, when speaking to a businessman who had sponsored a private party on   the Mediterranean island, he noted that parliamentarians “scrounge you all   the time” and were “political hangers on”.

Mr Binley attended a drinks party hosted by the Bank of Valletta before being   treated to an open air concert in the Maltese capital featuring Rebecca   Ferguson, a runner-up on The X Factor, and Joseph Calleja, a Maltese tenor.

An undercover reporter was present at the function.

Mr Binley had accompanied Mark Pritchard, the Conservative MP for Wrekin, on   an official visit to the island.

Both are members of the all-party parliamentary group for Malta.

Mr Binley said the visit was funded by the taxpayer.

During the VIP party, the MPs met the Maltese prime minister, Joseph Muscat,   government ministers and MEPs, as well as senior members of the bank.

It is understood that the Bank of Valletta gave the MPs two free tickets for   the event, but that Mr Pritchard also obtained two tickets for the concert   from a friend.

Mr Binley told the local businessmen that he would speak positively about the   event’s sponsor when he returned home.

“We will talk about the bank of Malta won’t we? … Bank of Valletta, sorry. And   we will say what a wonderful organisation it is,” he said.

He also offered to “repay” his hosts’ hospitality if they came to London.

The disclosures will add to concerns that some MPs are too close to businesses   that want to promote their interests in Britain.

On Wednesday The Telegraph disclosed that Mr Pritchard offered to use his   political contacts to set up business deals with foreign officials and   ministers in return for payments totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Mr Pritchard said that he had not broken the Code of Conduct and that his   business contacts were unconnected to his parliamentary work.

Mr Binley and Mr Pritchard spent five days in Malta this summer.

They stayed in a five-star hotel in St George’s Bay, a popular tourist resort.   Rooms can cost more than €400 (£340) a night and staff at the hotel were   told the two men were “VIPs”.

When Mr Binley was asked by a reporter who had funded the trip, he replied   that it had been paid for by the taxpayer.

“It’s mostly taxpayers’ money. Some of it’s European money actually. It’s   mostly taxpayers’ money. European money is taxpayers’ money,” he said.

During their stay, Mr Binley and Mr Pritchard met members of the Maltese   government, including the foreign and finance ministers.

Mr Pritchard told a reporter whom he met at the hotel that the trip was    “worthwhile” because there was a “new government, so they need to get to   know us and we need to get to them know them. I will feed back to Number   10”.

When the MPs met Malta’s recently elected prime minister and his wife at the   party in Valletta, Mr Binley introduced them as a “two-man parliamentary   delegation”.

“Oh my God, that’s good”, said the prime minister’s wife.

“I think it’s better”, replied Mr Binley.

“It’s better actually. You get more treatment”, said the prime minister’s wife   with a laugh.

When talking to an executive of the bank, Mr Binley said that he and Mr   Pritchard had “conned our way in” to the party.

The conversation moved on to how the party and concert was “the one event   where everyone wants to be”.

The executive pointed out a member of the Maltese parliament and commented:    “So that explains it.”

Mr Binley replied: “Yeah, you see, we are totally corrupt”. Then, jokingly, he   added: “Not as bad as Chelsea fans.”

The MP also referred to the “pleasant night” and asked the businessman: “Was   it good for business? Because we were just hangers on, political hangers on”

Later, when discussing who had invited the MPs to the party, he joked: “Well,   we’ve got to be very careful, because we might, you know what politicians   are like, they’ll scrounge you all the time.”

Following the expenses scandal of 2009, Mr Binley was ordered to apologise for   his use of taxpayers’ funds. He rented a flat in Pimlico, claiming £58,500   in second home allowance.

However, the flat was owned by a company called BCC Marketing.

Mr Binley and his wife each own 20 per cent of BCC Marketing, while his son   owns a further 20 per cent. MPs are barred from using taxpayers’ funds to   rent accommodation if they have an interest in its ownership. After The   Daily Telegraph revealed the arrangement, Mr Binley was ordered to apologise   by the Standards Commissioner.

He was also ordered to return £1,500. “I consider the breach of the rules in   respect of the Mr Binley’s rental claims to be a serious matter,” John Lyon,   the Standards Commissioner, wrote in his report.

Mr Binley moved out of the flat and it was sold in 2011 for a profit of up to    £110,000. BCC Marketing bought the Pimlico flat for £345,000 in 2006 and   sold it for £455,000 in 2011.

Mr Binley previously complained to the Press Complaints Commission after The   Daily Telegraph stated that he was a millionaire. The PCC upheld his   complaint.

He stood for election as Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons last month,   but lost out to Eleanor Laing, a fellow Conservative.

Mr Binley refused to comment.

Bill De Blasio, the first Democrat elected  mayor of New York City in a generation, is a Massachusetts-raised former  supporter of the communist Sandinistas who married a lesbian poet.

And he’s a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.

De Blasio’s path to becoming the leader of  America’s largest city was unorthodox – especially compared with his Democratic  predecessors.

He rose up the ranks of Democratic politics.  He worked as a junior aide to the last Democratic mayor, David Dinkins. He  served in the Clinton Administration and ran Hillary Clinton’s 2000 bid for the  U.S. Senate. He served three years as a Democrat on the City Council.

But he is not necessarily a product of the  party political machine like previous Democratic mayors – in part because that  machinery no longer exists in the way it once did.

Childhood in Cambridge,  Massachusetts

De Blasio was born Warren Wilhelm, Jr. in  Manhattan in to an  Italian-American mother and a German American father. For  reasons  unknown, he has always gone by Bill.

Both were highly-educated – Warren Wilhelm  Sr. had degrees from both  Harvard and Yale and Maria De Blasio went to Smith  College.

Before De Blasio was born, both his  parents  had worked for the federal government, but had to flee  Washington after being  accused of being communists.

When De Blasio was a few years old, the  family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, home of Harvard University.

He lived outside Boston until attending  college at New York University.  One result of his Massachusetts upbringing:  He’s as fan of the Boston  Red Sox – the arch-rivals of New York’s hometown  baseball team, the  Yankees.

But life in the Wilhelm house was not happy.  His father was a war hero who lost a leg to a Japanese grenade  while serving in  the Pacific during the Second World War.

When De Blasio was seven, his father suddenly  left the family. Warren Sr.  was battling alcoholism, which De Blasio believes  was a result of the  horrors he saw in war.

In 1979, when De Blasio was still a teenager,  Warren Sr. committed suicide.

After his father’s death, he changed his last  name from Wilhelm to his mother’s maiden name: De Blasio.

He told New York magazine: ‘She was often  very, very sad about thing that  had happened to her, but she had a fierce  resilience – a very sharp and  purposeful resilience. She was very  practical.’

Chirlane McCrayNew York City has been without a First Lady  for nearly all of the 21st Century, so New Yorkers have welcomed  the presence  of Bill De Blasio’s wife Chirlane McCray on the campaign  trail.

But, De Blasio himself has promised that  McCray will be unlike any First Lady the city has ever seen.

‘All I can say is buckle your seat belt. Get  ready for Chirlane McCray,’ he told a crowd last month, according to the New York Daily News.

McCray will, indeed, be different the the  other spouses who have lived in Gracie Mansion.

For starters, she’s a black former lesbian.

When her family moved to Longmeadow,  Massacushuetts, where she grew up, they were the second black family in the area  and neighbors started a  petition to get them to move out.

She attended in Wellesley College and moved  to New York to work in publishing.

In 1979, she write a story in Essence  magazine titled ‘I am a Lesbian.’  The piece is still celebrated by gay and  lesbian leaders for working to  dispel the myth that there were not homosexuals  in the black community.

'If you want to understand me, understand Chirlane,' De Blasio saysShe was an aide to Mayor David Dinkins in  1991, when she met De Blasio, who was a deputy mayor’s aide.

‘The way Bill describes it, I walked in with  my African dress and my nose ring, and he heard choirs singing,’ McCray told New Yorker.

‘I did not have that  experience.’

Eventually she showed him the Essen article  she wrote. De Blasio wasn’t deterred. He persisted in courting her and McCray  said she fell in love. They married two years later in 1994.

Daughter Chiara was born six months  later.

De Blasio has promised that his wife would  take an active role.

She was an ever-present face on the campaign  trail – along with the couple two children, 18-year-old Chiara and 16-year-old  Dante.

The Daily News reports that she also helped  vet staffers. She is expected the play a large role in his  administration.

‘If you want to understand me, understand  Chirlane,’ he told the newspaper.

Greetings from Italy

Maria De Blasio was from Southern Italy and  De Blasio still speaks Italian – he even uttered a few words of Italian during  his victory speech Tuesday night in Brooklyn.

Meanwhile, in Sant’Agata de’ Goti, Italy, his  maternal grandfather’s hometown, villagers gathered to celebrate De Blasio’s  victory. The mayor of the town of 11,000 said he hopes that one day the Mayor of  New York will visit the small hamlet outside Naples.

Supporting a brutal socialist  regime

When De Blasio was in the college in the  1980s, he made a trip to Nicaragua. The Central American nation was in the midst  of a bloody civil war between the Soviet-backed socialist Sandinista government  and the U.S.-backed rightist Contras.

De Blasio initially said he visited the  capital of Managua on a relief mission to hand out supplies to war refugees.

However, once there, he grew to admire the  socialist regime, which President Ronald Reagan was attempting to help  overthrow.

On his return, he joined the Nicaragua  Solidarity Movement of Greater New York, which had a goal to ‘end capitalism,  replace with democratic socialism.’

His support for the Sandinistas, who were  accused of slaughtering hundreds of innocent civilians and ‘disappearing’  political opponents, became an issue on the campaign trail.

Republican Joe Lohda told WCBS-TV: ‘Mr De Blasio’s involvement with the  Sandinistas didn’t happen in 1917; it happened 70 years later when the cruelty  and intrinsic failure of communism had become crystal clear to anyone with a  modicum of reason.

Mr De Blasio’s class warfare strategy in New  York City is directly out of the Marxist playbook. Now we know why.’

But De Blasio didn’t shy away from his past  political views, saying he was ‘very proud’ of his activism on Nicaragua.

‘I think at that time, United States policy  towards Central America was wrong,’ he said in September.

‘I think most Americans came to believe it  was wrong. I was proud to be an activist working against it.’

It was also revealed that in 1994, he and his  wife Chirlane McCray honeymooned in communist Cuba – at a time when it was  illegal for Americans to travel there. It was a fact that De Blasio and McCray  didn’t even tell their two teenage children.

A political fixer goes  public

De Blasio has been interested in politics his  whole life. In high school, he was nicked named ‘Senator Provolone,’ a nod to  both his Italian heritage and his love of student government.

He attended New York University, where he led  student protests to keep the library open longer and oppose tuition hikes. He  went on to earn a Masters of International Affairs from Columbia  University.

In 1989, he joined the campaign for Mayor  David Dinkins as a volunteer. His hard work was rewarded with a posting as an  aide to a deputy mayor in the Dinkins administration.

It was there that he met his wife, who is six  years older and was a speechwriter for Dinkins at the time.

After working on the re-election campaign for  President Bill Clinton, he was appointed as a regional director for federal  Department of Housing and Urban Development. In that director, he was the  highest-ranking HUD official in the New York and New Jersey area.

In 2000, the Clintons tapped him to run  Hillary’s U.S. Senate campaign.

The next year, De Blasio stepped out of the  shadows for the first time and ran for public office himself. He won a crowded  primary for the 39th district in Brooklyn with 32percent of the  vote.

After serving three terms – including one in  which he was the leader of the Brooklyn coalition, he won city-wide office as  Public Advocate.

Pentagon’s security chief misused authority, probe shows

Pentagon's security chief misused authority, probe shows

The head of Pentagon security forces misused his authority by treating employees to a golf outing during the workday, relying on others to fetch his lunch and improperly getting a relative into an agency firing range, a Pentagon investigation showed.

Steven Calvery is still the director of the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, but he was subjected to an unspecified form of “administrative action” as a result of the investigation, a Pentagon spokesman said.

His civilian agency counts around 1,300 employees, including uniformed Pentagon police in charge of protecting the Pentagon itself as well as the Navy Annex and other facilities.

The Defense Department’s Inspector General detailed its findings in a 40-page report, which was completed in February but only released in redacted form on Monday.

It said Calvery misused his office staff by regularly relying on them to pick up his lunch and retrieve his coffee, something that was not part of their official duties.

“I would hope if they felt uncomfortable doing it, they would tell me,” Calvery was quoted saying in testimony. “And if they did feel uncomfortable, then that would be okay.”

It also singled him out for improperly approving four hours of paid leave for about 100-150 employees to participate in a golf tournament for the security force in 2009 and 2010.

After seeking legal advice, Calvery had already concluded on his own that they had to take time off starting in 2011 if they wanted to attend the tournament, which he saw as a team- building exercise.

The Inspector General’s investigation also found that Calvery improperly got a relative access to his agency’s firing range. While there, that unnamed relative used an agency weapon, ammunition and was helped by two firearms instructors.

“We determined that family members of other PFPA employees were not offered the same benefit,” the report stated.

Was Kenya mall massacre ‘mastermind’ backed by CIA cash? Disturbing claims by ‘double agent who worked with terror suspect for years’

  • Morten Storm was an informant for  intelligence agencies for five years
  • Met Abdukadir Mohamed Abdukadir, or  Ikirma, in Nairobi in 2008
  • At the time, the Somali terrorist was  only a messenger in Al-Shabab
  • Storm believes CIA gave him the resources  to become a mastermind

The CIA inadvertently gave a terrorist leader  the finances and credibility he needed to mastermind a major attack, claims a  former spy.

Intelligence officer Morten Storm from  Denmark was asked by the CIA to build a relationship with the head of militant  group Al-Shabab, the group behind September’s attack, and handed over money and  equipment on behalf of Western intelligence agencies to cultivate the group’s  trust.

In 2008 he started to forge close contacts  with the leader Abdukadir Mohamed Abdukadir, also known as Ikirma, in a bid to  uncover information on potential targets and planned attacks.

Agent: Morten Storm (left) converted to Islam after  spending time in prison in Denmark. He then became involved in militant  activities in Yemen and forged links with fundamentalist leaders including Anwar  al-Awlaki

When Storm first met Ikrema it was at a  Somali restaurant on the first floor of the Jamia shopping mall next door to the  main mosque in Nairobi. Two other jihadists were there with Ikrema.

Ikrema at that time was a messenger for Ahmed  Abdulkadir Warsame, an al Shabaab leader. Storm was meeting with Ikrema in order  to get messages and equipment to Warsame. Storm was known to Warsame and to  Ikrema as a fellow jihadist.

But the relationship broke down in  2012 when  Storm left the CIA due to a ‘disagreement over a mission’ and  he now claims the  plan to provide Ikirma with money and equipment may  have backfired  spectacularly.

He also believes that had his relationship  with the CIA not faltered he  could have helped capture or kill the man believed  to have gone on to  plan the September attack on Westgate Mall.

Storm converted into to Islam after spending  time in prison and developed extreme jihadist views and moved to Yemen in  2001.

He became trusted by fundamentalists and  became involved in militant activities, including recruiting soldiers to fight  in the Taliban.

However he was recruited by the CIA, MI5 and  the Danish intelligence service, PET, as a double agent to information on  operations in Yemen and Somalia and prevent attacks in Europe.

When Storm first met Ikirma, he  was only a  messenger for the jihadists and was sent to pick up an electronic device from  the Danish agent by one of the groups then leaders.

As the relationship developed, Storm claims  that the CIA, using him as a middle man, gave him resources, equipment and the  authority he needed to mastermind a  major terrorist attack, similar to the one  in Nairobi which killed 67  people.

Storm, who has since retired from duty, told  CNN that in March 2012 PET had offered him one million Danish krone (£125,000)  to  lead them to Ikrima on behalf of the CIA.

He was offered the job after he was paid  £156,000 ($250,000) to meet with Anwar al-Awlaki, an Islamic militant who was  killed in a drone strike in 2011.

Storm said Ikrima was at the centre of a  global network connecting a number of terrorist operatives in Somalia, Kenya,  Yemen, and the West and had emerged as the chief handler of foreign fighters  because of his language skills and level of education.

Even though Storm is not aware of the exact  role Ikrima played in the attack in Nairobi, he knows his track record and  believes he had the capability to be one of the masterminds.

The former agent also insisted he might have  been given an insight into the plans had he still been working for Western  intelligence, but his relationship with PET and the CIA ended in mid-2012 after  a disagreement following a mission in Yemen.

He said: ‘I get really frustrated to  know  that Ikrima had been maybe involved in the Westgate terrorist  attack. It  frustrates me a lot because it could have been stopped and  I’m sad I can’t be  involved in this.’

‘He was one of the smartest ones I met in  east Africa.’

One of Ikrima’s former associates also told  CNN in Nairobi that he was the ‘main link’ between Somalia and the Kenyan-based  militant group Al Hijra.

Now Western counter-terorrism officials fear  his reputation in Jihadist  circles worldwide will be bolstered by his escape  during the U.S.Navy  SEAL operation in Somalia last week, and he is now in a  position to plan more deadly attacks in Europe and Africa.

CNN reporter Nic Robertson,  who interviewed  Storm, told MailOnline: ‘He is frustrated because he  gave equipment and  material to Ikrima which allowed him to build up his  credibility in Al-Shabab.

‘When he first met him 2008, Ikrima was just  a messenger in a group and now he is head of the organisation.

‘Storm’s viewing is that had the CIA paid  closer attention to Ikirima and had  the plans that were being put in place for  Storm to keep closer tabs on  him followed through, then there would be more  information on their  operations and potential targets.

‘It would have allowed Storm to develop  closer contacts with Ikirma, and  would have enabled him to find out what they  were thinking and what they were planning.

‘His  accounts of where he was and what he  was doing has all checked out.  Encrypted emails he has sent and received show  he was in central  position in the relationship.

Storm started his jihadist career in Yemen  and, after he made contacts  contacted the CIA, as well as Danish security  agency and MI5.

Mr Robertson added: ‘Storm provides a rare  opportunity to see inside  agencies. It provides a rare insight into the way  that they work.

‘To get closer into an organisation you need  to build relationships. It can be a double-edged sword and in this case it  was.

‘It put a smart guy in a position of power  for a very negative effect.

‘Storm believes the attacks could have been  thwarted. He is not involved in this anymore so he doesn’t know if Ikrima  actually had a direct role.

‘But he knows Ikirma’s track record. Storm  was seen as an important connection who could move between their worlds in Yemen  and Somalia and the rest of the world.’

Ikrima is believed to be able to  speak five  languages – Norwegian, Swahili, Arabic, Somali, and English – which puts him in  a position of authority in Al-Shabab.

Now said to be in his late twenties he was  born into a middle class Somalian family in Mombassa, Kenya.

His family then moved to Nairobi where the  young Ikrima excelled at school in the languages, including French.

After a successful education, he traveled to  Norway in 2004, because of the potential economic opportunities in Europe, and  took advantage of his Somali ethnicity which allowed him to apply for refugee  status.

Despite being given documents to stay in the  country, he did not fit in and started to become radicalised.

Just four years later, he left Europe and  returned to East Africa.

It is also believed Ikrima spent some time in  Britain and lived in London for between six and 12 months.

The CIA would not comment on the story and  PET said they could neither confirm or deny they knew Storm.

How ‘high-level U.S. government agency’ fell for fake femme fatale created by two hackers

By  James Nye

PUBLISHED: 00:44 EST, 4  November 2013 |  UPDATED: 08:03 EST, 4 November 2013

Two hackers staged a successful cyber-attack  on an unidentified U.S. government agency simply by setting up fake LinkedIn and  Facebook accounts posing as an attractive and smart young lady.

Creating social media profiles for a pretty  28-year-old girl named Emily Williams, the two online security experts even  managed to con government employees out of a laptop and their highly classified  network credentials.

The researchers even managed to persuade  staff at the agency, which is known for its cyberspace defenses, to click on a  corrupted e-card that obtained passwords, sensitive documents which according to  the hackers included information on state-sponsored attacks and individual  country leaders.

Duped: This photograph of Emily Williams is blurred to protect the identity of the real woman who worked in a restaurant near to the U.S. government agency who was instrumental to convincing staff to reveal classified information
Duped: This photograph of Emily Williams is blurred to  protect the identity of the real woman who worked in a restaurant near to the  U.S. government agency who was instrumental to convincing staff to reveal  classified information

The pre-Edward Snowden attack was officially  sanctioned as a test within the U.S. and security experts and carried out by  Texan firm, World Wide Technology employees Aamir Lakhani and Joseph Muniz last  year.

Explaining their findings to an audience at a  tech-conference  RSA Europe 2013 on Wednesday, October 30, Lakhani said of  the compromised e-card clicker, ‘This guy had access to everything. He had the  crown jewels in the system.’

Lakhani who works as a solutions architect at  World Wide Technology refused to reveal which agency was infiltrated but said  that the attack began last year and was conducted against a firm which  specializes in cybersecurity  and protecting national secrets.

The test began with the creation of  28-year-old Emily Williams, a fictitious MIT graduate with 10-years IT  experience, complete with a fully functional fake social media  profile.

For this Lakhani sought and gained the  permission of a local waitress who worked as a waitress at a Hooters near to the  targeted agency’s officers – however, no one during the three month test seemed  to recognize her according to ZDnet.

Bolstering her fake profile, the team created  fake profiles on other websites and forums, posting on MIT using her  name.

Convincing: This exchange shows how 'Emily Williams' made some employees of the unidentified government agency believe they were talking with an old friend
Convincing: This exchange shows how ‘Emily Williams’  made some employees of the unidentified government agency believe they were  talking with an old friend

Launching the profile of Emily Williams,  Lakhani discovered that within the first 15 hours, Williams had made 60 Facebook  connections and 55 LinkedIn connections with employees from the targeted agency  and its sub-contractors.

Incredibly she had three jobs offers from  three companies within 24 hours of her online presence being  launched.

The experiment was created to exploit a  fundamental problem with online security – mainly that people are trusting and  also attractive women experience preferential treatment in the male-dominated IT  industry.

This was born out through the fact that a  similar test using a fake male persona made zero connections.

Infiltrator: Aamir Lakhani, who works for Texas based firm World Wide Technology demonstrated how easily men in the technology world are duped by a pretty woman
Infiltrator: Aamir Lakhani, who works for Texas based  firm World Wide Technology demonstrated how easily men in the technology world  are duped by a pretty woman

More worrying for governmental online  security is the fact that Lakhani revealed that the team had achieved their  objective of infiltrating the agency within one week, but carried on for a  further 90 days.

Lakhani and Muniz carefully curated the fake  identity of Williams netting hundreds of connections.

When one slightly suspicious man asked  ‘Emily’ how they knew him, the researchers replied with information they got  from his own profile – prompting the man to reply that he did remember  her.

Once she had made connections in the agency’s  Human Resources, IT Support and with executives, Lakhani and Muniz simply  updated her profile to just-hired.

And then for the hacker’s biggest deception  that seriously compromised security.

Sending seasonal cards to specific Facebook  friends of ‘Emily’s’, the hackers waited for the recipients to click, accessing  their computers most classified details through progreams such as Browser  Exploitation Framework (BeFF).

Their deception went further: ‘Once we hooked  the target, we would look for passwords and insider information to gain access  to the target agency,’ said Lakhani.

‘We launched three campaigns targeting  systems during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.

‘We were able to figure out domain  credentials to create an inside email address for Emily Williams, VPN passwords  to gain internal access and other methods to compromise our  target.’

Lakhani and Muniz may have angered some  government employees, but the pair enjoyed such success they now have requests  from other companies and organizations to try the same test.

In the RSA talk last week Lakhani said, ‘So  we also did the same type of penetration test for very large financial  institutions like banks and credit card companies, healthcare organizations and  other firms, and the results were almost exactly the same.

‘Every time we include social engineering in  our penetration tests we have a hundred percent success  rate.’

SAN DIEGO November 4, 2013 (AP)
By JULIE WATSON Associated Press

Nicknamed “Fat Leonard,” the gregarious Malaysian businessman is well known by U.S. Navy commanders in the Pacific, where his company has serviced warships for 25 years.

But prosecutors in court papers say Leonard Francis worked his connections to obtain military secrets by lining up hookers, Lady Gaga tickets and other bribes for a U.S. commander, in a scandal reverberating across the Navy.

The accusations unfolding in a federal court case in San Diego signal serious national security breaches and corruption, setting off high-level meetings at the Pentagon with the threat that more people, including those of higher ranks, could be swept up as the investigation continues. A hearing Nov. 8 could set a trial date.

Navy commander Michael Vannak Khem Misiewicz passed confidential information on ship routes to Francis’ Singapore-based company, Glenn Defense Marine Asia Ltd., or GDMA, according to the court documents.

Misiewicz and Francis moved Navy vessels like chess pieces, diverting aircraft carriers, destroyers and other ships to Asian ports with lax oversight where Francis could inflate costs, according to the criminal complaint. The firm overcharged the Navy millions for fuel, food and other services it provided, and invented tariffs by using phony port authorities, the prosecution alleges.

“It’s pretty big when you have one person who can dictate where ships are going to go and being influenced by a contractor,” said retired Rear Adm. Terry McKnight, who has no direct knowledge of the investigation. “A lot of people are saying how could this happen?”

So far, authorities have arrested Misiewicz; Francis; his company’s general manager of global government contracts, Alex Wisidagama; and a senior Navy investigator, John Beliveau II. Beliveau is accused of keeping Francis abreast of the probe and advising him on how to respond in exchange for luxury trips, prostitution services, etc. All have pleaded not guilty.  Defense attorneys declined to comment.

Senior Navy officials said they believe that more people would likely be implicated in the scheme, but it’s too early to tell how many or how high this will go in the naval ranks. Other unnamed Navy personnel are mentioned in court documents as getting gifts from Francis.

Francis is legendary in military circles in that part of the world, said McKnight, who does not know him personally. He is known for extravagance. His 70,000-foot bungalow in an upscale Singapore neighborhood drew spectators yearly since 2007 to its lavish, outdoor Christmas decorations, which The Straits Times described as rivaling the island city-state’s main shopping street with replicas of snowmen, lighted towering trees, and Chinese and Japanese ornaments.

“He’s a larger-than-life figure,” McKnight said. “You talk to any captain on any ship that has sailed in the Pacific and they will know exactly who he is.”

Navy spokesman, Rear Adm. John Kirby said Navy Criminal Investigative Service agents initiated their probe in 2010, but declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation.

That same year, Misiewicz caught the world’s attention when he made an emotional return as a U.S. Naval commander to his native Cambodia, where he had been rescued as a child from the violence of the Khmer Rouge and adopted by an American woman. His homecoming was widely covered by international media.

Meanwhile, Francis was recruiting him for his scheme, according to court documents.

Misiewicz’s family went to a Lion King production in Tokyo with a company employee and was offered prostitution services. Within months, the Navy commander was providing Francis ship movement schedules for the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group and other ships, according to the criminal complaint.

Shortly after that, the manager wrote to Francis: “We got him!!:),” according to court documents.

Misiewicz would refer to Francis as “Big Brother” or “Big Bro” in emails from a personal account, while Francis would call him “Little Brother” or “Little Bro,” according to the complaint.

The company bilked the Navy out of $10 million in just one year in Thailand alone, U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said.

In December 2011, the two exchanged emails about the schedule of the USS Blue Ridge, investigators say. According to court documents, Francis wrote Misiewicz: “Bro, Slide a Bali visit in after Jakarta, and Dili Timor after Bali.”

The complaint alleges Misiewicz followed through on the demands: In October 2012, the USS George Washington was scheduled to visit Singapore and instead was redirected by the Navy to Port Klang, Malaysia, one of Francis’ preferred ports where his company submitted fake contractor bids.

After Francis offered Misiewicz five tickets to a Lady Gaga concert in Thailand in 2012, Francis wrote: “Don’t chicken out bro we need u with us on the front lines,” according to court documents.

The federal government has suspended its contracts with Francis.

The defendants face up to five years in prison if convicted of conspiracy to commit bribery.

NSA chief Keith Alexander blames diplomats for surveillance requests

EEV: And what former General was having a relationship with a Romanian Diplomat?

Barbed exchange with former ambassador over spying on foreign leaders likely to deepen rift with Obama administration

The director of the National Security Agency has blamed US diplomats for requests to place foreign leaders under surveillance, in a surprising intervention that risks a confrontation with the State Department.

General Keith Alexander made the remarks during a pointed exchange with a former US ambassador to Romania, lending more evidence to suggestions of a rift over surveillance between the intelligence community and Barack Obama’s administration.

The NSA chief was challenged by James Carew Rosapepe, who served as an ambassador under the Clinton administration, over the monitoring of the German chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone.

Rosapepe, now a Democratic state senator in Maryland, pressed Alexander to give “a national security justification” for the agency’s use of surveillance tools intended for combating terrorism against “democratically elected leaders and private businesses”.

“We all joke that everyone is spying on everyone,” he said. “But that is not a national security justification.”

Alexander replied: “That is a great question, in fact as an ambassador you have part of the answer. Because we the intelligence agencies don’t come up with the requirements. The policymakers come up with the requirements.”

He went on: “One of those groups would have been, let me think, hold on, oh: ambassadors.”

Alexander said the NSA collected information when it was asked by policy officials to discover the “leadership intentions” of foreign countries. “If you want to know leadership intentions, these are the issues,” the NSA director said.

The exchange on Thursday night drew laughs from the audience at the Baltimore Council on Foreign Relations, but did not seem to impress the former ambassador, who replied: “We generally don’t do that in democratic societies.”

It also risked deepening the division between the Obama administration and the intelligence community, which have been briefing against one another throughout the week.

Alexander had previously insinuated that targets of surveillance emerged from elsewhere in the administration, but this is the first time he is known to have publicly singled out US diplomats.

Just hours earlier, secretary of state John Kerry appeared to lay the blame at the door of the NSA, when he said certain practices had occurred “on autopilot” without the knowledge of senior officials in the Obama administration.

Alexander was asked by the Guardian how he thought Merkel, who grew up in East Germany when the Stasi secret service was operating, might have felt when she discovered her phone had been monitored by the NSA. “I don’t know, I don’t know the answer,” he said. “You know, I would say ‘alleged’.”

Asked why he would say “alleged”, given he presumably knows the monitoring occurred, Alexander said: “I say alleged because there are no facts … that are on the table.”

But Alexander also opened the door to the US halting surveillance of foreign leaders, hinting that it might be in the best interests of the US to suspend some surveillance programs to guarantee support to combat terrorism.

“I think those partnerships have greater value than some of the collection,” he said. “And we ought to look at it like that.”

Alexander, who is soon stepping down from the NSA, spoke after an eight-day period in which his agency has faced a growing chorus of criticism over its activities, particularly in relation to allied nations such as Germany.

The NSA may also lose its ability to gather domestic phone data – a program Alexander has previously sought to guard.

In his speech in Baltimore, Alexander adopted a slightly different tone, suggesting he was “not wedded” to the program if a better alternative could be found.

Competing legislation has been introduced in the House and Senate this week to reform the NSA and the secret surveillance court that is supposed to hold it to account. One bill, which has growing support on Capitol Hill, would effectively end the routine collection of phone records data.

“I am not wedded to these programs,” Alexander said in his opening remarks. “If we can come up with a better way of doing them, we should. Period.” Speaking specifically about the collection of phone records, he compared administering the program to holding a “hornets’ nest”.

“We’re holding this hornets’ nest for the good of the nation. We would love to put it down, we would like to cast it aside, but if we do it is our fear that there will be a gap – and the potential for another 9/11 – and we would not have done our duty. So our duty would be: find another way.”

The reference to the September 11, 2001, attacks was consistent with previous remarks. On Wednesday, al-Jazeera published a master list of NSA “talking points”, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

Under the subheading “Sound Bites That Resonate”, the memo encourages references to 9/11 as justification for its mass surveillance.

“You know, every one of us remembers 9/11,” Alexander told the audience in Baltimore. “You remember where you were, what was going on, what happened when the first plane hit, what was going on when the second plane hit – it changed our lives.”

Alexander recalled firefighters killed trying help victims of the attack, and invoked the image of a fireman, during 9/11, “handing the flag” to the military and intelligence community. “We, the military and intelligence community, said ‘we’ve got it from here’,” he said. “That is etched on our hearts and our minds forever.”

Police have confirmed they have obtained a  long-reported video that appears to show Toronto Mayor Rob Ford using crack  cocaine.

The explosive allegation has been made public  following the release of documents that form the basis of a major drug  investigation.

Police say they rummaged through the garbage  of the major of Canada’s largest city and conducted an extensive surveillance  operation to monitor him and close friend Alexander Lisi, Ford’s sometime  driver, who has been charged with marijana trafficking and  possession.

Ford first faced allegations in May that he  had been caught on video puffing from a glass crack pipe.

While he denies the video exists, two  reporters from the Toronto Star said they have seen it.

Both the Star and US website Gawker.com  claimed they had been offered to buy the video, which was taken on a cell phone  and has not been released publicly.

Police said Ford was put under surveillance  after the allegations were made.

Forensics have since the located a ‘digital  file’ of the video from a hard drive after it had been deleted.

Toronto Police Service released documents this morning  that show police surveillance photos of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford (left) and  Alexander Lisi, Ford’s friend and occasional driver, making repeated meetings.  In the meetings they would exchange bags or parcels and would often not  acknowledge each other. The investigation started after two media outlets  alleged the existence of a video showing the Mayor using crack cocaine, which  police now claim they have

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said the  video is ‘consistent with what had been previously described in various media  reports’.

‘I think it’s fair to say the mayor does  appear in that video but I’m not going to get into the detail of what activities  is depicted in that video,’ Chief Blair said in a news conference at a police  headquarters.

Chief Blair said he was ‘disappointed’ after  viewing the video.

In another twist, Lisi, already facing drug  charges, has been taken into custody today and charged with  extortion.

Police said ‘the accused made extortive  efforts to retrieve a recording’.

The documents also show Ford receiving  suspicious packages from Lisi on several occasions, some which were caught on  camera and released to the media.

‘Lisi approached the driver’s side of the  Mayor’s vehicle with a small white gift bag in hand; he then walked around to  the passenger side and got on board,’ reads one document dated July 30, 2013.

‘After a few minutes Lisi exited the Escalade  empty handed and walked back to his Range Range Rover.’

Another dated July 28 says Lisi ‘constantly  used counter surveillance techniques’ when he met with Ford that  day.

On August 13 documents say Lisi and Ford met  and ‘made their way into a secluded area of the adjacent woods where they were  obscured from surveillance efforts and stayed for approximately one  hour’.

Police documented Lisi exchanging several  phone calls with Ford, using  four different numbers to reach him.

Starting Aug. 7,  when police began tracking  the phone numbers of calls to and from Lisi’s cellphone, until Sept. 19, Ford  and Lisi exchanged 349 phone calls.

Ford recently vouched for Lisi in a separate  criminal case, praising his leadership skills in a letter filed with the court.

The letter was part of a report prepared by a  probation officer after Lisi was convicted of threatening to kill a  woman.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has not yetresponded to the  documents released by police today

Ford angrily yelled at reporters today to get  off his property during a heated exchange before he left his house in the  morning.

He didn’t respond to numerous questions about  the allegations.

Ford said previously that he was shocked when  Lisi was arrested earlier this month, calling him a ‘good guy’ and saying he  doesn’t abandon his friends.

The documents also say that Payman  Aboodowleh, a volunteer football coach at Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School,  where Ford coached the team, told police that Lisi met Ford through him.

He told police he was ‘mad at Lisi because he  was fuelling the mayor’s drug abuse’, the document says.

Ford former staffer, Chris Fickel, told  police he didn’t know where Ford got marijuana from, but ‘has heard that  ‘Sandro’, Lisi’s nickname, may be the person who provides the mayor with  marijuana and possibly cocaine,’ the document alleges.

However, Fickel added, he has never seen Lisi  provide the mayor with drugs. The mayor would call Fickle and tell him to tell  ‘Sandro’ that ‘I need to see him,’ Fickle told police.

Facing a press conference at his office this  afternoon, Ford said he wouldn’t step down from his position.

He did not take questions from  reporters.

‘I think everybody has seen the allegations  against me today,’ he said.

‘I wish I could come out and defend myself,  unfortunately I can’t, ’cause it’s before the court and that’s all I can say  right now.

‘I have no reason to resign, I’m going to go  back and return my phone calls, gonna be out doing what the people elected me to  do and that’s save taxpayers money and run a great government.’

Did the NSA even spy on the POPE? U.S. spies accused of intercepting phone calls during conclave as he was elected head of Catholic church

  • US security services ‘targeted Francis in  run up to and during conclave’
  • Claims NSA intercepted phone calls made  to and from priests’ residence
  • Other leading bishops and cardinals ‘also  being monitored by US spies’

The US spied on both Popes Francis and  Benedict, it was claimed today.

American security services reportedly  targeted Francis in the run up to and during the conclave at which he was  elected head of the world’s 1.2billion Catholics.

As the cardinals gathered in Rome to choose  their leader in a secret ballot, it was said the National Security Agency  intercepted phone calls made to and from the priests’ residence occupied by the  then-Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Maria Bergoglio.

Other leading bishops and cardinals were also  being monitored by US spies, weekly current affairs magazine Panorama claimed.

‘It is feared that the great ear of the  United States may have continued to intercept the conversations of prelates  until the end of the conclave, March 12, 2013,’ the magazine said.

Archbishop Bergoglio had been a person of  interest to the CIA since 2005, it claimed.

The latest revelations follow allegations by  American website Crytome that the US monitored 46million Italian telephone calls  last year.

Calls by former Pope Benedict, who resigned  in February this year, may have been among them – as voice traffic to and from  the Vatican was also intercepted, Panorama said.

Conversations relating to the selection of  new President of the Vatican Bank were also said to have monitored.

US spies divided information from Vatican  targets into categories including Leadership intentions, Threats to financial  system, Foreign Policy Objectives and Human Rights, the magazine  claimed.

A secret-service cell made up of NSA and CIA  operatives continues to work out of the US embassy in Rome, the news weekly  said, citing 2010 documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward  Snowden.

As well as analysing voice and data traffic  from tapped mobile phones, the operatives follow money trails through contacts  who are database administrators, bankers and engineers with access to  high-security sites, it was reported.

The NSA has denied the  allegations.

‘The National Security Agency does not target  the Vatican. Assertions that NSA has targeted the Vatican, published in Italy’s  Panorama magazine, are not true,’ agency spokeswoman Vanee Vines said in a  statement.

The Holy See said it had no knowledge of any  such activity.

Asked to comment on the report, Vatican  spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said: ‘We are not aware of anything on this  issue and in any case we have no concerns about it.’

NSA ‘broke into Yahoo and Google data centers to obtain millions of records every day’… and leaked doodle shows how spy agency did it with a smiley face

  • In 30 days, the NSA gleaned 180 million  new records including text, audio and video – and who sent it to whom and when  they sent it
  • NSA: Claims that we collect data this way  are not true

The National Security Agency has secretly  broken into the Yahoo and Google data centers around the world to steal hundreds  of millions of records, it was reported today.

Every day, the NSA sends millions of records  from Yahoo and Google internal networks to data warehouses at the  agency’s Fort  Meade, Maryland headquarters, the Washington Post reported, citing documents  leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden.

The documents include a slide from an agency  presentation  entitled ‘Google Cloud Exploitation’, featuring a sketch showing  where  the ‘Public Internet’ meets the internal ‘Google Cloud’ of user data.

On the sketch, a note adds that encryption is  ‘added and remove here!’ and the artist then jots a smiley face – in what the  Post calls a ‘cheeky  celebration of victory over Google security’.

‘Two engineers with close ties to Google  exploded in profanity when they saw the drawing,’ the Post reported.

In the 30 days after January 9, field  collectors processed and sent back more than 180 million new records – ranging  from ‘metadata’, which would indicate who sent or received emails and  when, to  content such as text, audio and video.

Both companies said they had not given the  NSA permission to do so and where not aware of the activity.

The NSA’s principal tool to exploit the data  links is a project called MUSCULAR, operated jointly with the agency’s British  counterpart, GCHQ.

The program uses an unnamed  telecommunications provider giving secret access to a cable for Google and  Yahoo to pass unencrypted traffic between their  servers.

The Post said NSA and GCHQ are copying entire  data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data  centers of the Silicon Valley giants.

The NSA’s leader, Gen. Keith Alexander said  he was unaware of the report, adding that the NSA is not authorized to access  data centers and must go through a court process to obtain it.

‘The assertion that we collect vast  quantities of U.S. persons’ data from this type of collection is also not true,’  a spokeswoman added, Politico reported.

The report comes despite the companies saying  their servers are closely guarded and strictly audited. According to Google,  buildings housing its servers are guarded around-the-clock and secured with  heat-sensitive cameras and biometric verification.

In a statement to the Post, Google  said it  was ‘troubled by allegations of the government intercepting  traffic between our  data centers, and we are not aware of this  activity’.

At Yahoo a  spokeswoman added: ‘We have  strict controls in place to protect the  security of our data centers, and we  have not given access to our data  centers to the NSA or to any other government  agency.’

White House officials and the Office of  the  Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the NSA, declined  to comment,  the Post said.

The NSA already collects data from Google,  Yahoo and other technology  companies under another program known as PRISM –  details of which were  revealed by Snowden earlier this year.

The program legally compels the companies to  provide the agency with information that matches court-approved search  terms.

The collection of data by MUSCULAR would be  illegal in the U.S., but the operations take place overseas, where the NSA can  presume anyone using a foreign data link is a foreigner, the Post  said.
