A book for young schoolchildren, titled “Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope” is now widely discussed on the Web, although the book was written as early as before the November 2008 election that brought Obama to power for the first time.

To be more precise, it is not as much the book itself that stirred the discussion, but a brochure titled “Barack Obama Lesson Plan and Prezi”, which is a teacher’s guide on how to hold a school lesson on the book “Son of Promise”.

Bloggers say that allegedly, in “Son of Promise”, Obama is depicted as a person distinguished by God, if not a messiah.

Some bloggers also claim that allegedly, this book has been recommended by the Common Core (an education initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should know at the end of each grade).

However, it is a rather doubtful statement that the book “Son of Promise” is depicting Obama as a messiah. True, the book says that from his early age, Barack Obama has been dreaming of helping the poor and bridging the gap between whites and blacks. In the book, Hope and even God Himself speak directly to the young Barack. Besides, there are some phrases in the book implicitly equate Obama with the Biblical characters, like a phrase that Obama was wearing the name of his father, Barack, “proudly, like a coat of many colors” (an evident parallel with the biblical Joseph) or that Barack “worked hard as a farmer, planting his seeds” (obviously an allusion to one of Christ’s parables).

However, all this is still not enough to say that the book is depicting Obama as a messiah.

On her website, the author of “Son of Promise”, Nikki Grimes, is denying that she has ever ascribed any messianic features to Obama. The only person whom she recognizes to be a messiah is Jesus Christ, she says. Ms. Grimes hopes that the book’s young readers will have enough common sense to see that the book’s author is far from proclaiming Barack Obama a messiah.

Besides, there is no evidence that the book “Son of Promise” is in any way linked with the Common Core or that any governmental body in America is insisting on a lesson on this book as an obligatory one for every school.
