There is a “very real danger” that Scotland could vote for independence because of complacency about the Union, the Scottish secretary has warned.
Alistair Carmichael said many people had taken the union “for granted” and up to a third of voters in next year’s referendum are undecided about Scotland’s future.
The vote could end up being a re-run of the 2011 Scottish Parliament elections, which the SNP won after securing the support of thousands of undecided voters in the final weeks of the campaign.
Independence would mean Scottish people are denied the chance to support British athletes such as Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis, he said.
“I think there are people all over the country who kind of take the existence of the union for granted,” Mr Carmichael said. “What we’ve got to get across is that this is a very real danger to the future of the United Kingdom.
“There is an enormous number, maybe even up to a third, of people in polls saying they are still undecided. If you look back at the situation before the 2011 Scottish elections, similar figures were undecided.
“At the end of the day they all went to the SNP. If that happens again and those people go for independence this becomes very, very close.”
