A popular 15-year-old student has committed suicide after he reportedly faced expulsion and being placed on the sex offenders’ register simply for streaking at a high school football game.
Christian Adamek, from Huntsville, Alabama, hanged himself on October 2, a week after he was arrested for running naked across the Sparkman High football field during a game.
The teenager died two days later from his injuries and on Wednesday, friends and family gathered at a memorial service as they struggled to comprehend the beloved student’s death.
A video of Adamek streaking during a game against a rival team was posted on YouTube hours after the event and students took to Twitter to call him a ‘legend’.
Loss: Christian Adamek, 15, hanged himself last week after he faced possible expulsion and criminal charges for streaking across his high school’s football field during a game the week earlier
‘Sparkman’s new slogan is gonna be “Welcome to Sparkman High School, Home of Christian Adamek”,’ one student wrote.
But school staff did not treat the situation so lightly.
Sparkman High Principal Michael Campbell told WHNT a day before the suicide attempt that the teen could face major repercussions because of his actions.
‘There’s the legal complications,’ Campbell said. ‘Public lewdness and court consequences outside of school with the legal system, as well as the school consequences that the school system has set up.’
Incident: Adamek, seen right, was filmed streaking across the school football field on September 27
In Alabama, indecent exposure is linked to the state’s sex offender laws, meaning that he could have found himself on the sex offenders register due to the streaking.
Campbell added that that the incident was not just a prank and needed to be treated seriously.
Sparkman High administrators even recommended that Adamek face a hearing in the Madison County court system to determine if formal charges would be filed, WHNT reported.
Adamek had also been disciplined by the school district but the details had not been made public.
The day before the suicide attempt, the principal had confirmed that Adamek was not at school and the teenager’s sister suggested on Twitter that Adamek faced expulsion, AL.com reported.
Popular: After the streaking, fellow students called Adamek, pictured, a ‘legend’ but the school district took it far more seriously, recommending that he had a court hearing and disciplining him
Missed: He is pictured with his mother, Angela, in his younger years. He also leaves behind a brother and sister
Campbell declined to comment on Adamek’s death but the Madison County school district issued a statement saying it had ‘received word that a Sparkman High School student has passed away’.
‘Our prayers and thoughts are with the family during this time of bereavement,’ the statement read.
The messages on Twitter have now turned from congratulatory to somber.
‘Praying for the Adamek family. Christian was so funny and nice. He will be missed by so many,’ one girl wrote.
The family – Adamek leaves behind his mother, Angela, and a sister and a brother – shared photos and memories online of the fun-loving teen, who was pictured posing and grinning at the camera.
At Wednesday’s memorial service, his Boy Scout Troop master, David Silvernail, said Adamek was a popular teenager who always had a smile on his face.
Questions: The principal of Sparkman High School in Harvest, Alabama has not commented on the suicide
‘There are two kinds of people in the world; ones that brighten the room when they walk in and those that don’t,’ he said.
‘He was one that brightened the room when he walked in. That’s what I’ll always remember about Christian.’
His mother, Angela, thanked her son’s friends and said they could learn from his life, AL.com reported.
‘Remember to smile, don’t be afraid to do something goofy and remember the consequences of those actions, ask for help when you need it, ask for help if you think your friends need it if you don’t know what to do, be quirky, be happy, be smart,’ she said.

Ruin a child’s life for having fun? Are kids not allowed to make mistakes anymore?

No, they are not allowed mistakes. Zero tolerance results in expulsion, a new label with a 12-step program, ostracization, and/or jail. And we have allowed it all to happen “for the children”. It’s insanity.

The Principal should be fired. THERE SHOULD BE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR MORON EDUCATORS! Then the Principal should be prosecuted and sued for every penny he has and might earn! ZERO TOLERANCE!

This is heartbreaking ! We live in a world of utter chaos and horror and the big things go overlooked but yet they insist on making a stink about inocent pranks ! I bet if this had been an officials kid it would have been chalked up with a slap on the hands and that would have been it. There are so many more things to be concerned about but some….. has to focus on this and make an example that caused a death ! I hope he can live with himself now.Along with all those who will continue to insist that children be adults when they should be living as children.

My heart is sick reading this … the pain his family must be in and the agony he endured before he took his life. I believer there is a special place in HELL for that principal and the legal system that made him a criminal.

This is just heartbreaking. An innocent kid is now dead because he did something to be funny that happened to be a victimless ”crime”. One thing is certain: the principal, Michael Campbell, is CERTAIN to be a huge pervert behind closed doors and was compensating for his own sick, twisted mind. If he didn’t have some kind of dirty, twisted secret about himself that he felt guilty of, he would have never seen this incident as being anything other than a normal, childish prank. I am so, so sad for this child’s mother, family and friends. Bless them.

If he killed himself over expulsion, it his death was due to his parents not having his mental illness treated.
That is not a normal response.

You are some kind of special arent you? He was going to be listed as a sex offender and to me that is what put pressure on him to commit suicide, not the expulsion. I dont sense any mental disorder here other than that found in the principal who so harshly punished this kid.

CHILDHOOD is not a goddamned ILLNESS, mental or otherwise. Vitriolic overreacting to teenage antics is not a “normal response”. This was a victimless “crime” that warranted little more than detention and a remorseful essay. These kids are provided no margin for error or to learn the tools of life. Mistakes are not allowed. People need to wake the hell UP and use a little common sense for crying out loud before we make another entire generation neurotic as hell.

BS!!! A pretty normal response for a teen! This is just another example of how utterly stupid the school bureaucrats have become! Expulsion? Maybe. SEX OFFENDER? That is just plain ridiculous!

Expulsion? Never. Sex Offender? You’re joking. The principal should hang himself, and THEN streak across the football field. Be streaked, to be technical.

Did you not read the whole article? I don’t believe expulsion was his concern, it was being labeled a sex offender. that ruins your whole life, and being only 15, that’s a long time.

Jay, I would like to encourage you to read the whole story. Unfortunately, there were much bigger consequences to his childish prank. That’s what so many of us are angry about. And please be careful when using the “mental illness” angle. I’m a conservative Christian who suffers from mental illness. This child was probably scared (I’m guessing here) of the courts and being labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life. Suicide happens for many reasons. It’s not always about mental illness.

Which consequences are you alluding to?

Sure, Tommy. I’d be glad to. The article doesn’t only refer to expulsion. Here are the consequences he was being dealt. I took them straight from the above article:
Possible Expulsion
Sex Offenders’ Register
He was arrested
Possible Criminal Charges
Principal said, “Could face major repercussions.”
Legal Complications
Public Lewdness
Court Consequences
School Consequences
He was disciplined by the school district who recommended a court hearing and disciplining him although the details have not been revealed.
This was a much bigger mess than expulsion. He could probably go to another high school if that was the only consequence. Unfortunately, I think they went way over board in trying to make a point. I believe the fear and stress he didn’t expect from this silly prank pushed him to take his life. Agree or not, the facts remain. Christian is gone and no one can bring him back.
