Eight Chinese airplanes believed to include two fighters flew over the strait between Okinawa’s main island and Miyako Island in the morning in the first such passage through the area by Chinese military aircraft, the ministry said.
There was no actual infringement of Japanese territorial air space, it said.
Earlier in the day, the Chinese air force said about 40 aircraft conducted a drill to pass the strait and fly to the West Pacific, according to the Chinese media.
